What is National Honor Society?
NHS has been the "true mark of student achievement for over 100 years, but it goes far beyond a report card. By empowering, championing, and recognizing well-rounded students, NHS provides schools with a values-based framework to elevate a culture of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
NHS chapters operate in all 50 states and many schools around the world, engaging and serving more than 1.4 million students."
NHS members at DHS have a positive impact on their community. Members engage in service projects, participate in peer-tutoring, and seek out leadership roles in their sports, clubs, and activities. Members are required to log 10 service hours on their own, but many volunteer well beyond the required amount.
How does a student become a member of NHS?
All juniors and seniors who have completed five semesters with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 are invited to apply in early spring. The application is on Canvas with a strict deadline usually around Presidents' Day. Students are evaluated based on the 4 pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. An anonymous board of faculty reviews all applications based on a scoring rubric and then meets to discuss the applications. Application from the 2025-2026 school year with rubric included.
